Access & safety

Public access

The Maryland Heights trail (Harpers Ferry NHP, federal land) climbs the cliffs on the MD side of the Potomac with a famous overlook of Harpers Ferry — where the CSX Shenandoah Sub, Cumberland Sub, and Amtrak's Capitol Limited cross the river on the Harpers Ferry Bridge. MARC Brunswick Line also serves the WV-side station visible from the overlook.

Safety notes

The trail is a strenuous 1.5-mile climb with significant elevation gain. Cliff edges are unmarked — keep small children leashed/held. Federal park rules apply (no off-trail). Do not attempt to descend to track level.

Parking

Harpers Ferry NHP trailhead lots in Sandy Hook (MD) and the main NHP lot on the WV side. The MD-side trailhead is free; the WV NHP charges admission.

Best time of day

Mid-morning to early afternoon — the overlook faces south and SW across the rivers.

Train frequency

Moderate — combined CSX + MARC + Amtrak across the bridge typically gives a train every 30-60 minutes mid-day.

Nearby

Harpers Ferry WV (across the bridge, walkable via the pedestrian bridge) has restaurants, museums, and full NHP services.
